Voices
See the People. See the Possibilities.
Visual and narrative storytelling that surfaces
the real stories inside your organization.

THE WORK
Every organization or business has a story living inside it— in the people who show up every day, in the communities and clients they serve, in the values they act out, and in the expertise no one outside the building fully understands. Voices is MLA Strategies' approach to finding that story and giving it form. This service combines on-site photography, one-on-one interviews, focus groups, and narrative synthesis to produce rich human portraits of an organization's people and culture. Interviews may include staff at all levels, leadership, and the clients, constituents, or communities the organization serves. The deliverables are designed to be used as recognition, as communication, and as inquiry. The process itself often surfaces unexpected insights that a survey alone cannot.
THE COMPONENTS
Voices engagements are built from modular components, selected and combined based on the organization's goals, capacity, and the moment they're in. No two projects look exactly alike.
| On-site photography | Portraits taken where the work actually happens, not in a meeting room. The setting grounds each person in the reality of their everyday experience. |
| Individual profiles | Narrative-driven, voice-centered profiles reviewed and approved by each participant. Can range from a brief sketch to a full personal story. |
| Thematic synthesis | An analysis of what surfaces across multiple conversations: the patterns, values, and insights no single interview reveals on its own. |
| Display-ready assets | Portrait layouts with attributed quotes, formatted for walls, summits, digital displays, or print. |
| External content | Adapted versions of profiles and themes for websites, annual reports, grant applications, or advocacy campaigns. |
| From Story to Strategy | Facilitated leadership support to interpret findings and identify what to do with them. |

WHAT THIS WORK IS FOR
"What I expected to simply be a photoshoot and conversation became something much more meaningful. During my conversation with Monica, I found myself not only explaining why I show up for this work every day, but also reminding myself."—Hayleigh
Staff Recognition and Celebration
Employee profiles make people visible and valued in a way a plaque or shoutout cannot. When someone sees their own words and face represented with care and craft, it signals something real.
Internal Culture and Communications
A Voices project creates shared reference points across divisions, generations of staff, or a period of growth, without anyone having to write a mission statement.
Understanding Your Own Organization
Structured listening surfaces what staff, clients, or community actually believe, value, and need. This is organizational intelligence: not a formal assessment, but one that often reveals what a formal assessment misses.
Equity and Inclusion Work
Whose stories get told shapes whose experience is seen as central. A Voices project deliberately surfaces voices across role type, tenure, background, and location.
Change and Transition
Before or after a merger, restructure, or leadership shift, capturing who an organization is creates a record and a foundation. It signals to staff that their experience is worth preserving and understanding.
External Storytelling and Advocacy
Funders, policymakers, and the public respond to human stories. A well-told portrait of the people inside an organization is often more persuasive than any impact report. Content to support keynote speeches and other speaking engagements.
Onboarding and Belonging
A Voices collection is a living document of organizational identity: accessible, human, and more honest than an org chart.

HOW IT GETS DESIGNED

WHO THIS IS RIGHT FOR
Voices is designed for any organization or business with a story worth telling — and people worth seeing. That includes:
Nonprofit organizations and social impact intermediaries
City departments, public agencies, and community institutions
Early childhood networks and school systems
Philanthropic foundations wanting to tell the story of the communities or organizations they invest in
Values-led businesses whose work is rooted in relationships, craft, or community
FROM STORY TO STRATEGY
The storytelling work produces two things simultaneously: assets (profiles, photos, themes) and intelligence (what staff actually believe, value, and need). Most engagements begin with the assets. From Story to Strategy is the support for organizations ready to work with the intelligence. This can include leadership debriefs, strategy development, communications planning, and follow-up listening.
WHO WE ARE
Monica Liang-Aguirre, Founder, MLA Strategies

Monica brings 25 years of education and nonprofit leadership to every engagement, including founding a non-profit, leading an award-winning dual-language public school, overseeing a $23M early learning investment portfolio for the City of Seattle, and leading continuous improvement across a multi-state Montessori preschool network. Alongside her organizational career, she has spent decades as a portrait photographer, drawn to what people reveal about themselves when someone takes the time to really look and listen. That combination of operational experience, relational trust, and a photographer's eye for what is true and worth preserving shapes work that feels like the organization made it. Because in a real sense, they did.
